Ian Robertson was born in Tokyo and educated at Stowe, and spent several years working in publishing, before relocating to the continent to work as a freelance author and editor. He writes extensively on military history, and his books include Wellington at War: an Overview and Guide (2000), and Wellington Invades France: The Final Phase of the Peninsular War, 1813-1814 (2003). He has also edited and contributed introductions to new editions of many seminal books on the subject.
An experienced and well-regarded writer of cultural travel guides as well, Ian has written and edited several of the Blue Guides, including Austria, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Ireland, and Spain. He has been referred to as “the Elizabeth David of guide book writers”.
He has a special interest in Spain and Portugal, and has edited reprints including Richard Ford’s 1845 Hand-Book for Spain (1966) and Gatherings from Spain (2000). Ian has also written the biography Richard Ford 1796-1858: Hispanophile, Connoisseur and Critic (2004). His more recent books include Portugal: a Traveller’s Guide (1992), and A Traveller’s History of Portugal (2002). Ian currently lives and writes in Arles, the gateway to the Camargue.
