Strachan, Alan PDF Print E-mail
Alan Strachan is an acclaimed theatre director, and has recently turned his hand to biographies. Born and educated in Dundee, he received degrees from the universities of St. Andrews and Oxford before moving to London, where he embarked on a career of astonishing range and success. He has worked with, amongst others, Sir Michael Redgrave, Penelope Keith, Maureen Lipman, Sir Michael Gambon and Sir Alec Guinness, and came to early prominence as the director of Confusions and Just Between Ourselves, both by Alan Ayckbourn.

He was Artistic Director of the Greenwich Theatre in London for over a decade, putting on a combination of new plays and classic revivals, including a series of Noel Coward reappraisals and Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire (all of which transferred to the West End). Alan has directed plays in New York, Copenhagen and Amsterdam, but the majority of his work has been in London. These include plays and musicals in the West End, and at theatres including the Globe, the Haymarket Theatre and the Royal Court. He was Artistic Director of the Theatre of Comedy, and Executive Producer of the company's many successful theatre and television co-productions. Alan has worked at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park for a number of years, and many of his productions have toured, both nationally and around Europe.

In regional theatre, Alan has recently been involved with Alan Ayckbourn's theatre at Scarborough. In particular, he directed Ben Brown's new play Larkin With Women, which was later highly praised by London critics and is due to be touring soon. His first book was Secret Dreams (2004), the authorised biography of Michael Redgrave, and he is currently working on a life of renowned theatrical impresario Michael Codron, to be published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 2009.
